I think you must be right Kate, but since John Ruskin lived from 1819 to 1900, I fancy that AR was exercising some poetic licence in WH where he refers to the little place being built just over a hundred years ago by the old man who could look out on the changing scenery of the lake and hills. And then,a few lines later, we read "For nearly a hundred years he had been dead..".
I've never been there, so would be interested to know : is there a pole?
