You are only about 2 hours by train from Windermere. You may find something to do with AR in this area.
You will probably have to go from Manchester Piccadilly station and you may have to change at Preston and Oxenholme. Oxenholme is believed to the model for Strickland Junction in PP, although AR's drawing was reversed.
Otherwise Manchester does have a canal system and you may find someone who runs narrowboat trips.
It is believed that football is also popular in the Manchester area, if you are interested.
