I have two sons, aged 11 and 4. We live in a small market town at the head of an estuary, and we do mess about in boats, so to that extent circumstances are (not accidentally!) favourable. The elder boy and his closest friend are Swallows and Amazons enthusiasts, even the little boy knows the video almost word for word and likes playing camping. Next week we are off to Secret Water, taking a tent and a small wooden sailing dinghy aboard our wooden (Ransome-vintage) yacht.

This does not stop the older boy knowing far more about computers than I do, but he is probably saved from "consumer culture" by his parents lack of money! He has a bicycle, a sailing dinghy and a violin; he does not have designer trainers!
