The last pickup and set down by a mail train, whilst in motion, was In October 1971 at Penrith. I have a special envelope commemorating the event.
Although mail trains were finished in 2004, there was one reinstated to run between Willesden, Warrington & Shieldmuir. I think this is still in operation.
You could post a late letter directly onto the train at a station for an additional 1d (old penny)fee.
