Pam -

You wrote about a "favorite moment" for the D's about how important it was to Dick to record that he had seen buzzards.

There is another favorite moment for me where a bit of insight into their way of thinking...

"Dick! Look! The Martians are going to bed."

Dick started.

"What? What? Oh, it's you, Dot. You did give me a jump."

"Well, you ought to hang out a notice when you're not there."

My original impression of the D's was a bit negative, as I met them in PP before properly meeting them in WH. They struck me as intellectual show off's, daring to act like they are a part of this group of the S&A's. I actually resented their intrusion as foreigners not belonging to this group. This is the hazard of not reading these books in the proper order. After reading PP, I was given for Christmas the PM story, which of course features the D's. It was the FIRST personally OWNED Ransome book, and for that I was mighty proud, so I endured these two and read it anyway. But that warmed me up to them, and came to appreciate them much better. Perhaps it was their ability to handle the skinning of that Rabbit, then the audacity in pulling off that "burglary" that made me realize these two aren't so bad after all. Then when finally reading WH, it all began to make sense, and they truly became accepted in the SAD arena.
