It seems everyone has their point - the anti-sequel group (including AR's executors)feel AR dealt with the Swallows, Amazons and D's in a time and place context and it needs to go no further, while the pro-sequel group feel that the present stories are only the beginning.
What annoys me is that so many feel that only one group needs to prevail. People have the right to read only the original books - AR's work is precious and any sequels would not have his name and particular inspiration on them.
But, why can't sequels be written for those who obviously want them? It cannot be compulsory to read them, and protecting adults from reading what you don't want to read seems a tad precious. The executors alongside any reputable publisher should be able to protect the integrity of the characters and setting.
I love Gerald Durrell's 'My Family and Other Animals' but after looking at a minute of the film of the book, refused to watch it further because it didn't click with my own imagination. My husband loves the book and the film. Its his prerogative and I'm happy with it.
