A quick look at ABE Books shows that you can get AR books at prices starting at $1!! 53 Pence!!! Really quite affordable.

I do think it is arguable that we could have more meaningful discussions - and perhaps appreciate Ransome better, if we actually read what he says. Too many people - I am sure none of us on TarBoard - make statements about him which are quite simply not supported by the books themselves.

Mind you it isn't only Ransome. For example how many literary critics dismiss Biggles as racist? There was a time when he was excluded from Public Libraries on this ground - perhaps he still is. Obviously the Critics have never actually read the books. Read what Biggles actually SAYS about different races and you get a rather different impression. He even makes friends with Von Stalhein in the end!
