I think the real problem, Prue, was that AR had run out of interesting ideas on which to base a story. He said this on occasions.
The one book that some like least is GN, where the plot was supplied by someone else and to me it does convey a depression that was present in the immediate post war years.
We had "won" the war but rationing was stricter than in wartime and in general people were worn out after the war and conditions did not start to brighten up until the early fifties.
We would all have like more but we ought to be very satisfied with what we have. Perhaps lesser authors would have given to us "more of the same", but I think this was beneath AR.
