I don’t think that GN was the first book on a plot supplied by someone else. Or did Oscar G. just provide the technical details of mining and smelting for PP? And GN ends with success, the Diver is back on the nest with the eggs (even if we don’t know whether they hatch).
AR did not want to repeat his first book all over again, which is why SD and PP ends with the S & A’s back on the island and all set to start sailing, and racing Swallow against Amazon. But the stories stop there. AR had already done that in SA, which also has the development of relationships by the Walkers, first with the Amazons then with Captain Flint. So SD & PP have new plots. In SD the Walkers without Swallow on land, plus the Amazons who are let out occasionally. In PP the S & A’s are again camping on land, plus the search for (and smelting of!) gold.
But I find PM with the D’s my favorite of the books. Dick & Dorothea learning to live on their own (Dorothea is a good cook says Nancy optimistically; well I have watched Susan cook says Dorothea). And they learn to sail on their own too.
