AR is ambiguous about 'living of the land'. In PD the Wilcat is crammed with supplies even though Captain Flint was only contemplating a short voyage. The Swallows do a fair bit of fishing, but the daily milk run and regular supplies from the natives are an essential part of the life support system. Only in PM do the D's make a serious attempt to be self sufficient.
If I ever get around to having a go at finishing CN there will be blueberries. (HELP! Does anyone know whether blueberries grow wild in the Lake District?)
