Michaelmas is the traditional name for the school term that includes the feast day of St Michael (September 29).

Michaelmas is pronounced with a short I, i.e. approximately MICK-ul-muss.

A year or two ago we had a thread on the wide range of names used by different British schools and universities for the three terms of the school year. They all have their terms at roughly the same dates (one leading up to Christmas, one from January to Easter, one from Easter to summer), but they often have their own names for them. The four law terms also got a mention.
