One of my favorite 'types' of girls' lit (chick lit for kids?) are the nurse novels- Gail Gardner, Sue Barton, Cherry Ames- the heroines started out in nursing school and moved on to different types of nursing in each book. (Visiting Nurse, School Nurse, Night Supervisor....) I often wonder how these characters would be treated in real life. "I'm sorry, Miss Ames, but we can't hire anyone with a history of job-hopping like yours."

These were clearly career books, aimed at encouraging girls in the 40's and 50's to become nurses. The adventure was fun too.
