The reaction of N&P to being asked to be hostesses seemed to me indicate that it was not a rare event.
I am trying to indicate that I do not see Beckfoot being a place of decaying grandeur. I would guess from AR's drawings that it may have been of Edwardian build and circumstances pre and post first world war changed markedly for many people.
I see it as a fairly vibrant household (could it be anything else with N in occupation?) and, as has been mentioned in the past by others, money to spend on redecoration internally and externally, plus the erection of a trellis, plus school fees for N&P etc.
Plenty of current revenue expenditure - not really a shortage of money.
