Some time ago Ian posted a link to the Ambleside Oral History Archive. It may be worth re-visiting as it provides a reference frame which may be of some help in positioning the Blackett household in the social pecking order. There are also some interesting observations which may help to illuminate the debate about "class".

Click on "The way we were"

The "Life in service" section is particularly interesting.
