John - you have helped confirm my theory that there is a pattern in Ransome of 'missing people'. I get the impression somehow that the S,A & Ds books are populated with widows, widowers, grandparents, great-aunts, unmarried persons . . . . and children. Couples in their 20s/30s/40s living together are rare. Capn Flint is a bachelor, and so is Timothy Stedding. The books didn't go on long enough for us to know if Mary Swainson married her woodman.
