Couples living together are really not all that rare, we just don't see them. Also children quite often spent long times away from their parents in days when travel was not so easy. My father didn't see his parents for several years while they were in India and he was in the UK being schooled. He lved with his aunt. I personally spent time with grandparents and aunts during some school holidays while my parents were in the Middle East.
Lets look at some of the principal characters
Walkers - Father in the navy but would live together otherwise
Blacketts - Missing father dead (or separated)
Callums - parents live together
D&Gs - as far as we know they live with their parents
Dudgeons - Close knit family
Farnon - widower
Eels - live together with the Missionaries
Mastodon - lives with intact family as far as we know
Owdon - lives with uncle
Dixons - live together
Jacksons - live together
Swainsons - missing adult male(s) or not mentioned

So of the principal child characters only the Blacketts and the Farnon families are not intact and the Walkers would be living together if their father was stationed in the UK. George Owdon's parents may be dead, separated or living happily together without him, we don't know. Of the farmers only the Swainsons seem to be missing an adult male.
