In my experience, unbraided "pigtails" are called ponytails--because they look like a horse's tail! I remember asking my mother to make "two ponytails" for me. My children now just call them "ponies". We use "pigtails" to mean two braids, and "braid" to mean one by itself. In other words, one cannot wear one "pigtail"--unless one is a sailor, whose braid was called a pigtail. I wonder why that is?
I also believe that the easiest haircut is the bob, but it is not conducive to the trying on of styles that many teens go through. My girls mostly have liked their hair longer, so they can put it up.
