To me, ponytails only ever come in ones. Sited high on the back of the head, as Elizabeth says looking exactly like a horse's tail. Pigtails are what Elizabeth calls two ponytails. If you plait your pigtails you end up with plaits (or braids).
Stranger still that pig's actual tails are curly, but curly ponytails don't have a specific name, do they (?ringlets maybe?)?
