As an argument against your thesis, in SD, the Amazons want to sit down around the fire with John and Peggy to discuss the happenings of the last year. Titty and Roger take advantage of this to explore, discovering the passage under the bridge and Swallowdale.
Of course, the D's could be better at writing letters than either the Swallows or the Amazons.
