I call on the collective database that is Tarboard, since the book in question is possibly British in origin and may be contemporaneous with AR's books.

Jerry Pournelle is looking for an alphabet book that starts

A is for APE
who took some white tape
and wound up his toes
in pretty white bows.
He remembers it from the 1930's and was told that it was written by a well-known English poet, possibly Masefield. If anyone remembers that, he would appreciate any information. Of course, my interest was piqued, so please cc me on any replies. Thanks!
