Thank you, everyone, for winning my bet for me. I bet a friend that the mere mention on TarBoard of a ridiculous topic like the 'Beckfoot refrigeration system' would start a discussion off. 'It keeps us going' - what about Arthur Ransome, and his books? Are they as popular as they once were? If so, why? Is that necessarily a good thing? Would you encourage your children/grandchildren to read them? What would you say to a children's librarian who refuses to have them available on the grounds that they are not 'relevant' today? Were the Swallows a 'healthy normal' family? Why was Nancy such a character? Had she ever known her father? What sort of impression of the English do AR's books create overseas? Etc etc.

But no, we are poking around the Beckfoot walls, looking for a damp course. Real clever stuff.
