Au contraire, the use of the "Most Recent Messages" gives rise to the random spawning of new threads. There's no facility on there for directly replying to a thread; you'd need to open the particular post (which you've just read), and then reply. How much easier to pop up to the top of the "MRM" page and "Start New Thread"? Thread drift happens whether there are sub-forums or not; one photography board I moderate has a 6600+ (and growing) post thread which started after the moderators began awarding various members custom titles. One of those so graced commented on it. Every weekend it seems to drift around to the weekend plans and activities of various members, there've been random discussions of what lens to get next, meet-ups planned, and some daring individuals have even posted (gasp!) their photos! Mind you, I couldn't imagine trying to follow that as a single thread with the layout TarBoard uses, but the TarBoard layout does facilitate keeping responses in-line with the posts that triggered them.
