I always thought that the winter holidays had been going on for a while before the start of WH. Christmas has come and gone, Dick and Dorothea have been doing lots of skating at their home rink, and the Swallows and Amazons have had time to build the igloo. In the US, for K-12 students, winter break is usually short- one or two weeks. In AR's world, it seems to last longer- even without plagues and fever.
