We got to where we quite enjoyed the many bus rides we took while visiting the Lakes District--however, we first had to adjust tot he up & down AND side-to-side swinging movement. We rode from Windermere train station to Ambleside (a lot of curvy downhill--for the best fun, sit up top!), made a race for some crackers & Sprite at Ambleside, then rode the 505 to Coniston (this one made us very nervous on our first ride as the driver sped along what appeared to us as single-lane roads, then stopped abruptly when he saw an oncoming car!) But they aren't as bad as the song makes out, and we found that people were very happy to chat as we bowled along, making the rides much more pleasant!

The shortest way we found in to Coniston is the bus from Ulverston--very direct w/no transfers. That's if you can get to Ulverston with any ease. You also get a good view of Morecambe Bay (or perhaps Duddon Sands--I am not sure I know what's what there) as you ride the train in to Ulverston from Oxenholme.

I hope you enjoy your trip!
