This discussion about AR's health fuels my questions about what makes his books so memorable. If, as Elizabeth, suggests, he crafted his work so meticulously because of ill health, does it explain how he managed to convey such a feeling of reality? "All I need is a competent housekeeper type like Susan and a couple of friends used to following rules, and I, too, can have great adventures." I have read many adventure stories, but none can compare with that rare feeling of "anything can happen" and will, if you just keep your eyes open. What was his secret? Was it poor health or something else?
