Well thanks again Ed - the plot really thickens now. For some reason, all the locals had gone over to 'Miss Ruth' by the time of 'Picts & Martyrs'. Were they influenced/terrorised by the G.A.? But in that case why didn't they call Peggy 'Miss Margaret', which the G.A. would have liked them to do?
To sum up - Peggy is always called 'Peggy' by everybody except the G.A. Nancy is always called 'Nancy' by the S&Ds and the family natives, but not always by local acquaintances, and never by the G.A.
I guess one answer might simply be that AR did not have electronic search facilities at his fingertips, and when he came to write PM he just forgot . . .
