I'm with your mother too Laurence! My dad was born in 1908 - grew up with a world war, an abandoned mother and no social agencies to help, Spanish flu, surgery on a kitchen table, the depression, outdoor toilet, another world war, rationing...the list is endless, and yet this was in a relatively clean small city.
My own children have had opportunities he couldn't even have dreamed of including tertiary education and overseas travel(not associated with war either). For my son, diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, I'm only too grateful he has a completely normal life thanks to modern medicine. And as for Health and Safety, certainly 'supervised' activities come under their shadow, but any innovative kid seems to manage to have plenty of adventures and come out comparatively unscathed, even if their mother turns more greyhaired daily.
Our problem is that we're consantly sucked in to the idiot media doom & gloom and really, we should know better!
