I see very few children who remotely resemble the Swallows in manner

I know quite a number of children who are a delight to be with, who are intelligent, thoughtful, reasonably well behaved, and who are capable of achievements - say musically, or in the field of electronics, which I would never have aspired to at their age.

Some things about them sadden me - they don't have the time to enjoy books as I did, and because of the dead hand of Health and Safety they aren't allowed to do many of the things that I enjoyed - or can only do them with overbearing levels of supervision and safety measures.

But I think civilisation IS marching and I have confidence in the ability of today's young people to keep it going forward.

Incidentally my 94 year old mother had a flaming row with the Vicar when he wrote in the Parish Mag "Who can deny that things were better in those days." She said "I deny it" and went on to list the effects of the poverty and deprivation - and crime levels - she knew when teaching in the East End of London in the 1930s.
