I think most Brits are aware of the American pronunciations of words because the US media has such a hold, there are numerous TV shows on in the UK, whereas very few if any on US national TV, in order to see British shows one has to watch PBS or BBC America and few other cable channels, though even then there is a trend to use American commentators instead of the original British ones.
I find living here I adjust my pronunciations to American versions in order to be understood. then back to English when with UK friends or family, of course even the spelling is different in some cases.
Reminds one, it is a foreign country.
