Not "Zed", nor "Zebra", but "Zulu". The US forces alphabet was replaced in the 1950s by the NATO alphabet. Ed will be delighted to see that it's Y for Yankee.
Ed, the word "zebra" is pronounced in both ways in the UK, ie Zebra (short e) and zeebra (long e)
