Regarding the beginning of the stroke, starting it some distance above the water, and then hitting it with some force producing a booming 'bellnote', has been consistently used by Jesus College Cambridge since 1910 or so (the onset of Steve Fairbairn, coach).. the efficiency of this vs. dropping the blade square in the water & then pulling is debatable..(rowers may select this college based on this ..)
It seems to strain the back less and helps the crew keep together ..
In racing, the boom can be heard for up to half a mile away ..
