Alan, thank you for this comment. Ever since being coxed by Johnathan I have had misgivings about my rowing style, now I feel a lot better! I guess the dead square drop is more appropriate to rowing in choppy seas in a boat with a lot of freeboard, while the diagonal entry (though without the high initial acceleration in the air of the Jesus College style) seems to be natural in a low freeboard Thames Skiff in relatively calm waters.

As well as having to adapt to the different rowing styles demanded by various coxes, my poor crew had to be proficient in various vocabularies of command: my own as per the original Jock, that of a former racing cox and those of Johnathan [straight out of Ian's manual]. When by ourselves, we sometimes played at being D & G's and would end the day by calling "Finished with engines" !
