Yes Jon, the measures I gave were weights. I quote the following rather pompous statement from the front of the recipe book : "A few minutes spent in weighing the ingredients ensures consistently good results, and removes a possible cause of disappointment. An accurate pair of scales is indispensable in a modern kitchen".
I think you can tell that this recipe book is from an era rather before electronic scales. I also possess a fairly ancient conical measuring flask which has markings of the levels corresponding to weights of various common ingredients, but I prefer to use the scales. The flask also shows US cups and pints next to what it calls STD cups (standard? cups) and as you said earlier, there is a considerable difference between the two systems.
