was it because she thought he should be working on more adult political pieces or some other sort of writing?

I think it unlikely that Evgenia would have preferred that AR write on those topics, because she would obviously have known where the money was coming from. She certainly was critical of the books, or rather the early drafts for the books. This distinction is important. Also important is the fact that, as illustrated by his diary entries, AR was his own worst critic. And he frequently acknowledged that ‘Genia is right’.

Evgenia Ransome has tended to have a poor reputation amongst AR devotees, largely due to the somewhat negative picture painted of her in the Brogan Biography. There is a splendid corrective article in the current Mixed Moss. I realise that non-TARS readers will not have read this (nor many Tars, according to Alan Hakim’s recent theories ;-)), but basically the article points out the many trials and tribulations which Evgenia had to undergo (think of all those house moves, for a start). In general, authors are not easy to live with, and Ransome must have been no exception. It is no accident that the Mixed Moss piece was written by a woman (Diane Janes). Diane points out that AR’s continuing close relationship with his mother (he wrote to her very frequently) probably did not make things easy for his wife. The article certainly made me see Evgenia Ransome in a new light.
