Well, in a sense Eric is right, although in the case of Tarn Hows the theory works in reverse. Tarn Hows was partially 'landscaped' to enhance its beauty in the 19th century, so the future influx of tourists to see it may have been anticipated. It was bought by Beatrix Potter, who later gave it to the National Trust. I have to say that I can never get the 'artificial' aspect of Tarn Hows out of my mind, so I am not a great fan of the place. For me, there are at least a dozen locations within a five mile radius of TH which are perfectly natural and far more breathtaking. But that's the Lakes for you.
