A totally unsupported supposition

"sent down to us from the house"

"sent down" rather than "brought down" suggests a servant by order.

hot pots take a lot of time to prepare so not really a matter of money.

Most unlike AR not to list the "other things", hope there was lots of cake, and some apples - oh and lots of chocolate.
