I think it's a reflection on Dot and Captain Flint mainly- their respective characters. After all, the whole bookshelf is fleshing out Captain Flint's character.

But it's also a reflection on the times. Maybe the young Ransome thought that ROTS was relevant to him, to Dot living in a comparitively secure world it isn't (and the non-presence of WW1 in the books does surprise me)
