Spectra fibre and Spectron (also Plexus 12 S) is the Trade name for the rope. As I type, we are towing two 38 square metre tow doors on Spectron that is just 30mm diameter. Each door tows with about 10-20 tons depending on the sea-state but the rope is rated for 83 tons. Our preference for this is mainly the safety consideration in that if it breaks then there is no steel wire coming inboard at high velocity. Spectron rope is stronger than steel for the same dimension and only one sixth of the weight of steel wire.

The rope is light grey and is nice to handle. I’m not sure that it is very good for staying a mast but could certainly be used for halyards and general running rigging – beats pre-stretched nylon any day!
