Is it the dreaded Class Distinction? Or was Port talking Ginty language - i.e. a Scots dialect as opposed to Norfolk (Old Bob)/Cockney (the Whittles?

Or did AR simply not do his proof-checking properly?

Certainly "the cock bird" would then and now have been a perfectly normal and ecceptable expression over here.
