Surely John's "ship of his own" would have been a reference to his taking command of HMS Swallow or another RN ship? Many of the advantages of a hire vessel (someone else pays for upkeep, crew and all) with limited disadvantages (less flexibility in your cruise planning) compared to either outright ownership or rental.
