The adventures of the D's in CC were no less adventures for the fact that the Teasel was not their own boat.

Maybe, but that didn't stop them wanting their own boat. Too many references in the books to quote them all, but Dick says in GN? 'Some day, perhaps, he too would have a boat like that . . . Dick would like to use a vessel of his own . .'

John was forever longing for his own vessel - 'when at last he should have a ship of his own' (WDMTGTS)

I doubt if either Dick or John would have been thrilled to be told 'well you can always hire one for £38 for half a day or whatever'. Where's the romance in that? In your own boat, you can go where you like, take as long as you like, have your own possessions aboard, and it's your own - your command. Heavens, I am not a sailor but I can well understand John's yearnings. (Credit must go to AR, of course, for the way he writes about sailing so that everyone can understand.)

Of course, we don't know whether Dick and John acquired their boats when they grew up. Again, a dream out of reach.

(I bet they did.)
