Strange, because it was PM that came to mind when I read your post. I think that I understand the attraction of the dream out of reach. In a similar vein - for many years I didn't read GN because I wanted to retain the feeling that there was always another AR book out there to read. Perhaps it really is 'better to travel hopefully than to arrive'.

HOWEVER, I'm not sure that brewing a cup of tea in the cabin of small boat is quite in the same league as the longing feeling that you have at the end of an AR book. As Per R and I have shown, it's quite achievable, it's very pleasant (though not as pleasant to my mind as opening a bottle of beer) and, having brewed cups of tea in both my own and hired boats, I don't think that the pleasant feeling is much affected by whoever has the legal title to the vessel. The adventures of the D's in CC were no less adventures for the fact that the Teasel was not their own boat.
