I had a girlfriend once, of the high-maintenance, center-of-the-world variety, who had the poor taste to ask me, a lifelong sailor, "if I said it was me or the boat, what would you say?" I replied "Bye?" That one didn't last much longer. I now have a wife who, when I was waxing rhapsodic, and compared her to an Alden schooner, considered it a high and romantic compliment. Fourteen years later, we're still going strong. In fact, she's currently as emphatic about getting the boat in the water for the summer as I am. Thank fortune the Puget Sound weather finally let off enough to get the brightwork done...

Owning does have its downside --maintenance expenses, dockage, the anxiety during storms, even the "shrinkage" Peter Roche describes-- but I wouldn't give it up.
