The recent discussion has sent me back to PM, which ranks high among my personal favorites. I realized that, though we haven't really met them, AR still gives us an excellent view of Professor and Mrs. Callum.

She is another of the 'good mothers' as exemplified by Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Blackett. We see that in the letter that she sends to the Picts- No nagging, just important issues- "Mind! No getting drowned." She also respects their personal property- "I am not touching Dick's Museum."

I see the Professor as a grown-up version of Dick, getting involved deeply in whatever he does. In that same letter, we have his reply to the D's about the 'Pict theory.' "...the origin of the belief in fairies and such was the half-secret presence in remote places of the original inhabitants of the country." This isn't how Captain Flint or even Cmdr. Walker replies to questions by the Swallows, Amazons and D's. It's a response more suited to another professor. I can picture Professor Callum, lost in the horror of undergraduate exam papers (or perhaps contemplating a trip to the Broads) and absently answering Mrs. Callum when she asks him about the Picts.

I'm sorry that CN was never finished- it would have been nice to actually meet these people instead of seeing them at one remove.
