I rather suspect that Tom stopped referring to the D's as kids simply because proximity eliminated the need to refer to them in the third person. Witness his reference to the D&Gs as "kids" taking the Death and Glory to Acle. Amazed, perhaps, but hardly derogatory or dismissive, IMHO. The D&Gs were certainly "accepted members of the group".
