I certainly recall corned beef being sold in a tapered can in California in the mid-70s. It may still be -- but I haven't looked since trying it once. However I remember thinking that it was probably what the Swallows called "pemmican".

What one usually buys today is a "fresh" corned beef brisket (sold in a sealed pouch); you boil it for about 2.5 hours, adding cabbage, potatoes and carrots if you wish in the last 1/2 hour at most.
