I was a guest of Lloyd's Register of Shipping at the Seatrade Awards dinner last night. The comments from the shipowning company guests on the table were pretty ripe - we had all of us drydocked a good few ships for repair.

You never, ever, disconnect a sprinkler system, if one is fitted, as they commonly are on passenger ships. You ensure that shore water is connected to it at adequate pressure.

You always have a Permit to Work system for hot work - welding, cutting and grinding in addition to using blowtorches for paint stripping.

You always, always, have a 24 hour fire watch.

This was incompetence.
