During the late thirties petrol was leaded; part of the advantage thet the RR Merlin engine of the Hurricane and Spitfire had over the opposing German planes was that they were running on 100 octane petrol, with heavy doping of tetra-ethyl lead.

I recall at work in the 1970s a book on petrol and additives - published as part of a chemical series by Mills & Boon!
