The official TARS policy for the IAGM is that the date is at the discretion of the region organising it, subject to the legal requirement that it must be within 15 months (I think – Peter H will know) of the previous AGM. However, there is a presumption that it will be held on the weekend ending on the last Monday in May, because that day is both a Bank Holiday and the beginning of the schools' half-term holiday. Therefore if a region proposes a different date, they have to get approval from the Trustees.
Since the invariable date regularly excludes some members, and requires officers either to give up their Bank Holiday or let the members down by being absent, there have been years when a different date was chosen, to avoid the clash. In 2001, Southern Region held it at the end of the school term in July, and got a reasonable turnout, but slightly below average.
The IAGM – as opposed to the AGM, which is a legally-required formal meeting – is aimed at families. Some members have suggested that the AGM could be attached to the Literary Weekend in alternate years, since its 'regulars' include many who never go to the IAGM (and vice versa).
