Thank you for this Alan; it does help those who can appreciate the books as well as their content.
In 1949 SA had declined to 490g at 375pp.
The BCA edition (1977) was down to 450g for 351pp (smaller typeface).
In 2004 BS was down to 520g at 368pp.
In my message 28220, I did mention that my 1937 SD weighed 760g for 453pp.
From my limited experience, I would say that the main problem with wartime paper in AR books was it's propensity to turn brown.
It does appear that there has been a decline in the weight of the paper, compared with pre-war days.
In addition, it may well be that when Cape revised the books in the 1980's that they took the opportunity to effect some economies.
